By now, the Godaddy nameservers should point at the Hostgator account, and when you type your website’s name in your internet browser, you should see the default Hostgator page.
If that is the case you can now start installing WordPress. It’s an easy process that should take only a minute. Here is how:
Log Into Your Website’s Cpanel
The ‘cpanel’ is the ‘back-office’ part of your Hostgator account where you can set all settings for your website hosting. You can e.g. see here who visited your website by looking at your website’s stats, or set up email accounts.
To access your cpanel, open your internet browser and type in the navigation bar on top your website’s name followed by /cpanel (replace mysite.com with your website’s name), e.g.
http://www.mysite.com/cpanel
Login with you user name and password you have set up for your Hostgator account and you should see the following screen:
To follow this tutorial, click ‘no, I’m fine’.
It’s however a good idea to get back another time and take the ‘Get Started Wizard’ tour to learn about all functions of your cpanel.
Note: If you want to set up email accounts for your new website, you should do it now and come back to this tutorial after wards. To set up a new email account, scroll down to the ‘Mail’ tab, and click on ‘email’. It looks more professional to have an email address ending in the domain name like johnsmith@mywebsite.com, but it’s your choice.
Now we are going to install WordPress on your web server
Scroll down until you see the ‘Software/Services’ panel, and click on the ‘Fantastico De Luxe’ icon:
Inside the ‘Fantastico’ panel, under ‘Blogs’, click on ‘WordPress‘:
Now we are going to set up WordPress:
Note: The WordPress version offered as ’1-click-installation’ by Fantastico might be different from the latest released WordPress version, as Fantastico is offering the ‘latest stable version’. This is ok as we can upgrade later.
Click on ‘New Installation’ and enter your website data in the following form:
Install on domain: (select your domain name)
Install in directory: (leave this blank)
Admin access data: enter a administrator user name and password (and write it down so you remember later)
Base configuration: This data will show on your website or blog.
- Your ‘Admin nickname’ will be the author of your posts
- Admin email address will be used by your website to communicate with you
- Site name is the title that Google will show for your website in the search results (you can change this later)
- Description is what Google will show for as description of your website in the search results (you can change this later)
Make sure to note your admin access data (here: username johnny, password abc123) before you continue as you will need it to access your website’s admin area!
Then click the ‘Install WordPress’ button.
In the following screen just click ‘Finish Installation’
The next screen will show you all data you entered. It’s a good idea to print it out and/or email it to yourself and keep it in a safe place.
Congratulations! Your website is now set up and ready to use!
